Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

From the back cover:
Harry Potter has never played a sport while flying on a broomstick.  He's never worn a cloak of invisibility, befriended a giant, or helped hatch a dragon.  All Harry knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son Dudley.  Harry's room is a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years.
But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to a wonderful place he never dreamed existed.  There he finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic around every corner, but a great destiny that's been waiting for him...if Harry can survive the encounter.

Aaron's Commentary  J. K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

The strength of this book is the writing style, reminiscent of Roald Dahl in its delightful excess.  For example, Harry Potter isn't just disfavored by his stepparents, he's left to inhabit a broom closet while his stepbrother gets two rooms filled with toys and while a guest room lies dormant.  The little details, like the faces moving about in photographs and chess pieces second-guessing the players, make this great fun to read for children and adults alike.  The story was not as successful for me.  Everything comes too easily for Harry.  I never believed he was in trouble, and he never had to do anything remarkable to prevail.
